Applications are now being accepted for the position of Dean, Career Education and Workforce Development, at the District Administrative Offices. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor of Instructional Services, this District senior level management position works in tandem with other senior staff and faculty across the District offices, the three SDCCD colleges and Continuing Education managing, implementing, evaluating and improving career education and workforce development programs within the context of changing program policies and operational procedures. Programs encompass the occupational, career, and workforce environment programs. The position provides management coordination to ensure the effective delivery of relevant career education and workforce preparation across the San Diego Community College District service region. While the current vacancy exists at the District Administrative Offices, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor. In addition, applications submitted may serve to establish an eligibility list for similar vacancies that may occur in the District throughout the academic year.

Major Responsibilities:

The candidate selected to fill this position must be able to successfully perform the following duties and responsibilities:

Provide leadership and coordinate and direct budgeting, communications, planning and policy activities, program development, and staff supervisory duties to enhance the cost-effective operation of this unit in its instructional services support role.

Identify and secure external resources through grants, contracts, and partnership agreements for workplace development programs across the colleges and Continuing Education.

Provide day-to-day administrative and management support for districtwide projects and programs in the career education area.

Establish and maintain working linkages and partnerships with industry, secondary education, and community agencies and organizations at the regional, state, national, and international levels important to the districtwide efforts in this sector.

Provide management oversight for the Districts career education programs, including business, economic development, human growth and child development, family and consumer education by making recommendations for evaluating, developing, and improving course outlines, objective and standards.

Develop, maintain, and monitor progress, as well as prepare timely reports on the funded grants, contracts, partnerships, and agreements in this sector.

Convene work groups, advisory committees, and councils from the colleges, Continuing Education, and industry in the workplace and economic arena.

Represent the District, when called upon, on local, state, and national boards, task forces, councils, work groups, and committees.

Develop, negotiate, review, and maintain agreements, including MOUs with allied health and child development agencies for students in child development programs and directed clinical and allied health practice situations, and other related partnership agreements.

Plan and guide the preparation and maintenance of a variety of records, reports, files, and databases related to program services, personnel, capacity building, and meeting district-wide goals and objectives for career education and workforce development programs.

Train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of assigned staff anchored in the unit.


The minimum qualifications for service as an educational administrator shall be both of the following:
(a) Possession of a masters degree;
(b) One year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrators administrative assignment.

Desired Qualifications:

History of increasingly more responsible experience involving the development, management, and delivery of instructional programs and services in the career education and workforce development sector.
Demonstrable knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, and state-of-the art requirements for career educational programs.
Experience in the use and application of new information technologies and office
automation tools; including word processing, database management, and spreadsheets.
Familiar with grant writing, proposal development, and reporting procedures.
Working background in complex budget development and management techniques.
Knowledgeable of legislative and regulatory policies, practices, and trends in career education field, community college program offerings, and needs and requirements of different employment sectors.
Versed in state and federal laws, codes and regulations, including federal and state
grant legislation affecting funding for career education.
Versed in principles and best practices of educational budgeting, planning, and management, supervising, and training of staff.
Experience in promoting and marketing career education programs, projects, and services.
Proven writing, speaking, presentational and interpersonal communication skills and abilities.
Ability to work independently and with little supervision; meet commitments and
deadlines; and plan, organize, supervise, and evaluate the work of others.
Establish, model, and maintain effective and cooperative working and interpersonal relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Successful senior administrative experience facilitating collaborative transformation systems or processes both internally and externally.


California Community College Supervisor Credential (valid for life)

Pay Information:

Range 18 ($8,685.11 $13,925.96) per month based on the current Management Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement is commensurate with related experience and promotional rules. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid: medical, dental, and vision plans; sick and vacation leave; and opportunities for professional development. Initial Salary Placement, Promoted or transferred employees will be placed as specified in the Management Employees Handbook. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime.
