Applications are currently being accepted for 2 (two) positions, Instructional Lab Technician / Biology, in the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, located at San Diego Mesa College. Hours are Monday-Friday; 40 hours per week. Selected candidate must be willing to adjust work days/hours based on the department's needs.

    • Significant upper division coursework or a bachelor's degree in general biology OR microbiology or a closely related field; OR additional two years of relevant work experience.



  • Demonstrated competence in laboratory techniques and equipment commonly required for community college laboratories in general biology OR microbiology.

 

  • Demonstrated competence in the application of laboratory safety guidelines involving the preparation and handling of cultures and live organisms.

 

  • Demonstrated knowledge in the proper handling, storage and disposal of chemical, biological, and hazardous wastes.

 

  • Demonstrated competence in culturing a variety of microbial species using aseptic technique OR the care and handling of live animals, including those with specialized needs.

 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic safety and first aid.

 

  • The skill to order, receive, maintain, organize and inventory equipment and supplies.

 

  • The skills and ability to oversee use, logs and maintenance of autoclaves, and other equipment in biology prep laboratories.

 

  • The ability to plan and organize work to meet schedules and deadlines for multiple course sections.

 

  • The ability to train, direct and provide support for laboratory professionals and student staff.

 

  • The utilization of standard office and web-based technology applications as needed or required.

 

  • The ability to work independently with little direction.

 

  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

 

  • Skills to establish and maintain effective collaborative working relationships with others to ensure a safe and equitable work environment.
