Job Description:
Description of Duties and Tasks
Avance to College is a nine-month program that supports Spanish-speaking families who have limited income and at least one child who is younger than 4 years of age. The mission of Avance to College is to strengthen participants' parenting skills, instill confidence in parents as their child's first and most important teacher, and connect parents with resources that can help them achieve the career and educational goals that they have for themselves. Weekly class meetings have 3 parts. There is a toy-making hour, a parent education hour, and a "Resource Hour" during which information is shared from ACC and community resources.

  • Teaches Avance to College Parent Child Education Program using Avance National Curriculum and teaching methods.
  • Facilitates communication between participants and representatives during Resource Hour each week.
  • Advises students of requirements established by Avance and Austin Community College for meeting course objectives. Periodically informs each student of their progress toward meeting graduation requirements.
  • Meets with partners from Avance Austin and Austin Community College to discuss student progress and needs.
  • Creates a safe and positive classroom environment where parents feel respected and represented.
  • Maintains a positive attitude.
  • Establishes and maintains an environment that is parent-centered, conducive to positive morale, and directed towards achievement of the project mission.
  • Ensures high standards of ethics by maintaining high standards for participant confidentiality.
  • Follows the toy-making sequence and pacing calendar.
  • Prepares for toy-making class by providing necessary handouts, sufficient material, and tools needed for parents.

Knowledge

  • Understands child development theories
  • Developmentally appropriate parenting and teaching practices for children 0 to 5 years old
  • Typical developmental ages and stages of children 0 to 5 years old
  • Importance of play in early childhood
  • Thorough understanding of LatinX culture and common strengths and needs within the Central Texas community
  • Classroom management and effective classroom engagement techniques
  • Open to being trained on the AVANCE Parent Child Education Program curriculum regardless of background and experience
  • Ideal candidates will have a strong belief that there should be no barriers to education and work to remove barriers that exist
  • Community Involvement. Supports and promotes the LatinX community and has involvement in LatinX student organizations or in the community


Skills

  • Establish effective relationships with students, families, faculty, and staff
  • Interpret, apply, and explain regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Plan and organize the programs and activities assigned
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to remain calm in emotional situations

Technology

  • Use a variety of spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software
  • Communicate with students and others via email and WhatsApp

Required Work Experience

  • Work in educational or social services settings with parents and young children in diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Required Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Child Development, Education, Psychology or related human services field, or combination of training and work experience.

Special Requirements

  • Bilingual - Spanish/English

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in a standard classroom or similar environment
  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling
  • Occasional lifting of objects up to 10 pounds
  • Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, and printer
  • Ability to move in a manner that allows for manual sewing, gluing, cutting, and craft-making
